Saturday offers Russell Wilson another chance to showcase why he deserves to be the Pittsburgh Steelers’ starting quarterback.
With plenty at stake for Steeler quarterbacks in this preseason finale, the line has swung drastically in Pittsburgh’s direction. However, as our Steelers vs. Lions predictions explain, our NFL picks are bullish on Detroit’s second-string roster ahead of this August 24 clash.

My analysis
The main storyline in this game revolves around the quarterback position for the Pittsburgh Steelers, as Russell Wilson battles Justin Fields for the starting spot come Week 1.
Both men are new to the city this year, but neither has made a strong case for securing the position in two weeks. This explains why Mike Tomlin has decided to play the starters, giving the Steelers head coach a better opportunity to evaluate them in action and determine who offers the best chance at winning.
That news saw the Steelers move from 3-point to 6.5-point favorites, but in reality, have we seen enough from either Wilson or Fields this summer to warrant a big move in price or to back them?
Fields completed five of six passes during his first preseason appearance, and he followed that up with just 92 passing yards in his second showing for the Black and Yellow. Meanwhile, Wilson made news for all the wrong reasons last week, passing for just 47 yards while being sacked three times.
Nate Sudfeld and Hendon Hooker have been given the bulk of the work for the Detroit Lions over the last couple of weeks, and they have each done a reasonable job. Given how anemic the Steelers have been, it’s worth backing a Lions second-string unit that has begun to gel.

Mike Tomlin is 0-2 this preseason, a poor mark considering that his overall exhibition record is 41-22 and Pittsburgh’s last losing preseason came in 2016. Find more NFL betting trends for Steelers vs. Lions.
